Ice fishing out of Catawba State Park: Starting Tuesday, wind will come out of SW 10-15 MPH. A little more than that on Wednesday and then 20-30 SW on Thursday. I would like to tell you ice is good but as of today, there are spots that have 10" of ice and after the rain and North wind over this past weekend, there are areas with 2 and 3 inches. A lot of fishermen were walking out yesterday and today. Some sleds and ATV'S also. If you go, do it slow and very cautiously. Anyone that is going out of park is heading south first and then west. Another option is East Harbor State Park for panfish and yellow perch. You may want to do that and give Catawba time to heal if it can.   Read more...

Walleye fishing the past 2 weeks has been pretty good, especially with the early ice. Not a lot of big fish yet. A lot of jumbo perch have also been caught. This is something very different from past ice seasons. The size and number of perch being caught has been great. Now the bad news...at least for the next 3 days (especially for those of you coming a long distance or from out of state), it would be advisable to hold off. Lots of South wind today (Thursday) until early afternoon tomorrow and then North wind and snow. There is a lot of water on the ice. IF ice holds and doesn't move much, it should firm back up over the weekend and into the first of next week with the cold temps and north wind ...   Read more...

Walleye fishing has been quite good going out of Catawba State Park this past week, especially today Friday. Thickness of ice is 8-10 inches in most places. Early in the week, Crane Creek and Magee Marsh opened up and the ice there pulled away from shore. From Camp Perry to Catawba Island, the ice has stayed good and locked in. Most fishermen running out of Catawba are going 1-3 miles NW. Productive lures have been the Rattle Streak, jigging rapalas and swedish pimples. Chrome, Blue, Perch and Antifreeze have been best colors. We DO have EMERALD SHINERS, waxworms and nightcrawlers as well as a great selection of ice lures.   Read more...

Contrary to all the posts the other day that the ice is gone and whatever, Catawba has 8-12 inches of ice. Folks are heading West and Northwest anywhere from 1-3 miles out of the state park. We will be opening tomorrow morning at 6:00 a.m. and will be open every day. We do have EMERALD shiners, waxworms and nightcrawlers, as well as a good selection of ice lures, ice augers and rods and reels, and all your other ice fishing needs. Haven't gotten the store quite all together yet, but we're getting there! A customer stopped today to give us a report. They were 1.9 miles NW out of Catawba and had 12 nice walleyes including one 30 incher.
