I wanted to send out this quick report on a trolling bite that happened on Saturday. We weighed some big fish for our big fish contest that were caught on the NW side of Kelleys. One of the fish we weighed was caught tight on the NW corner of the Island in 31 ft. of water. That man had a handful of big spawned out females. There was also a group of local captains that worked the west side of the island up to the NW corner and did well. We also weighed some bigger fish from the A can area. Most of the fish were caught on Bandits. Dark Purples, or combinations of Pink and Purple were working, Most active fish were up in 15 to 20 ft. range. Speeds were 1.5 to 1.9. A couple fishermen said they were just ...   Read more...

Another week has gone by. This time with a little warmth, and no BIG blows. The difference of better weather has turned up the jig bite quite a bit. The trolling bite, not so much. The pros from around the country have been here all week. As good as they are, their numbers were way down. I think they threw everything at these fish, but the kitchen sink. They simply ran into someone tougher than them. Mother nature. Everyone knows there are a ton of walleyes in the western basin at this time of year. The trolling bite could take off tomorrow or a week from tomorrow. Its coming. Keep the faith. The jig bite has been good in a few places the past few days. Fishermen going out in the early morning. ...   Read more...

Well....It's been a tough Spring so far. Wind direction seems to change by the hour out there on a daily basis. We took 76 phone calls this past Thursday from people in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, S. Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Kentucky looking for a heads up on walleye fishing for this past weekend. Wow! It seems like forever that the only bite going on was North of Kelleys Island: Suspended fish, trolling cranks slow and a hope you could get them to open their mouth on the day you were out there. Weather, weather, weather. Saturday started to change, as the Starve Island area turned on in the morning and trollers had some luck there. The "G" Can area (due west of Catawba State Park) also picked up later in the afternoon and evening. Not many fished G Can Saturday but the word got out and Sunday was a different story. It had cleaned up ...   Read more...

Happy New Year!  Another year begins.  Well, actually it happened last month with the summer weather in February.  A lot of nice, beautiful walleyes were caught over a 2 to 3 week stretch. First the trolling bite off Cedar Point and then at the end of that warm snap, they were being taken right off Mouse Island and Starve Is. reef by fishermen vertical jig fishing with Swedish Pimples and Rapalas.  I was lucky enough to get out off Cedar Point and had a trip of a lifetime.  It was nice to take a break from tying harnesses all winter and get my rear end off the couch.  Five of the fish we caught were over 10 lbs. with 14.2 lbs. being the biggest.  We kept 4 of the smaller fish, and after the picture taking, put them right back from where they came.  Every one was a female.  Every one was loaded with eggs.  Looking at the bigger picture, I like what I do for a ...   Read more...
